High Point at Play : Health and Leisure in Our City
Caption:
For the men and women who earned their living in High Point's factories, leisure was a prized but scarce commodity. To channel their workers' time into healthy pursuits, employers sponsored baseball teams. Manufacturing workers played in the Industrial League, while those in the business and service industries joined the Commercial League. Pictured is a team representing Highland Cotton Mills around 1930. In later years, participation in other sports, including bowling, were also encouraged.
