High Point at Play : Health and Leisure in Our City
Caption:
Hunting and fishing, both for food and sport, were High Point's earliest forms of outdoor recreation. Decades before the city's founding, the area was already famous for its Jamestown longrifles. With woods rich in game birds and venison, North Carolina was a popular destination for wealthy sportsmen. One of these men, Clarence Mackay, established a hunting lodge and game preserve alongside Deep River in 1905. This land later became Camp Uwharrie.
