High Point at Play : Health and Leisure in Our City
Caption:
Scouting was one of the earliest leisure activities to cater specifically to the youth of High Point. Hiking, camping and woodcraft encouraged boys' physical and social development. The Greensboro Council of Boy Scouts was formed as early as 1918, barely a decade after the establishment of the scouting movement itself. It was later renamed for General Nathaniel Greene. The Uwharrie Council, from which Camp Uwharrie's name derived, formed in 1923. In 1992, the councils joined to become the Old North State Council.

These photographs show High Point's African American Boy Scout Troop on a camping trip in the 1920s or 1930s. High Point was one of the few North Carolina cities to have a Boy Scout Troop for African Americans.
