In the 1920s and early 1930s, speed trials took place on the flat sand beaches of Daytona, Florida. Once those trials moved to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the city of Daytona tried to host stock car races instead. While many call Daytona home to NASCAR, the interest and leadership to develop the association included drivers from the Carolinas.
