100 Block, South Main Street, High Point : A UNC-Greensboro Class Project
Caption:
Elwood Hotel, circa 1940.
Constructed in 1902 across from the passenger railway depot, the Elwood Hotel was the crown jewel of downtown High Point and the cornerstone of South Main Street. The hotel advertised, "Sixty rooms and a bath on each floor, with some rooms having a private bath. The rooms are furnished with handsome brass and iron beds and imported rugs." The furniture and hosiery industries plus the furniture expositions brought travelers by train to High Point from all over the nation and kept the local economy going through the Depression and war years.
