100 Block, South Main Street, High Point : A UNC-Greensboro Class Project
Caption:
South Main Street business district, circa 1943.
The Roaring Twenties roared on South Main Street with more stores and automobiles crowding the 100 block. High Point experienced a boom in the construction of commercial buildings, seen in this later photograph. In 1922, work began on the nine-story Commercial National Bank, seen here on the far left. In 1925, the bank was joined by the Joe Cox Building. The Cox Building housed radio station WMFR until 1940, when it relocated to the penthouse of the Commercial National Bank. These buildings still stand today, but most people today know the bank building as the "Radio Building" because of WFMR!
