100 Block, South Main Street, High Point : A UNC-Greensboro Class Project
Caption:
South Main Street business district, circa 1935.
Customers crowd Mann's Drug Store as the Furniture Exposition Building looms in the background. After the urbanization boom of the 1920s and the success of Southern industries, the number of people living in North Carolina cities increased by the thousands. South Main Street was a busy and bustling section of High Point in the 1930s, accommodating the growing population with numerous shops beneath the Elwood Hotel such as J. C. Penney. Buses replaced the old, limited trolley system, and hanging traffic lights signaled the rise of the automobile.

Gift of the High Point Chamber of Commerce.
