100 Block, South Main Street, High Point : A UNC-Greensboro Class Project
Caption:
Depot Square, circa 1954 to 1958.
Depot Square has been the heart of High Point since its incorporation, when train service was vital to the growth of the city. The railroad tracks that divided North and South Main Streets were lowered below street level during the Great Depression, reducing grade-level intersections within the center city and freeing downtown streets for cars. Though invisible in this picture, the railway cut remains one of downtown High Point's most distinctive features.
