Arpie Milton Hildreth was working as a cotton mill laborer in Albemarle, North Carolina, when he registered for the draft in June 1917. He was drafted in September 1918 and trained at Camp Sevier, near Greenville, South Carolina, for nearly seven months before leaving for France on May 6, 1918. He served in the 119th Infantry, 30th Division.
