Centenary of the War to End All Wars : High Point Men and Women in World War I
Caption:
This photograph of Private Hildreth is inscribed "Rheims Battlefront." It is likely this is taken during the period of the final Allied assault on the European Western Front, from August through November 1918.

With his registration card and Class A card is a small journal which appears to be Hildreth's account of his service. He describes the voyage to France, where submarines attacked and nearly sank the ship, as well as his first air raids in Calais: "I thought we were all gone…Of course we were not scared but just felt uneasy."

After the war, Hildreth worked in the coal and oil retail business in High Point. He died in 1969, at the age of 78.
