Nellie French McIver lived with her father in Fulton, Georgia, when she joined the Atlanta Red Cross.

The Red Cross had nearly 20 million volunteers by 1918 and helped to recruit nurses for the Army Nurses Corps. Red Cross volunteers staffed ambulance corps and hospitals, both in the war zone and at home.
