On several occasions in the 1940s, '50s and '60s, High Point hosted the National Amateur Athletic Union's annual swimming and diving championships. The superb facilities at City Lake Park accommodated both contestants and spectators. Events were held over several days. When not competing, guests were entertained with social engagements held in private homes and goodwill tours of local historic sites and other points of interest.
