The High Point chapter of the YMCA was established in 1923, under the leadership of Edgar Hartley. Programming focused upon participation in physical sports. In 1952, a team from High Point won the YMCA's annual national basketball championship. As part of their reward, High Point earned the right to host the 25th annual championship. This was the first time the championship was held in the South. The visiting team, from Philadelphia, PA, included a young Wilt Chamberlain.
