100 Block, South Main Street, High Point : A UNC-Greensboro Class Project
Caption:
Two photographs showing the South Main Street area, circa 1900 to 1910.

#1 Depot Square.
Furniture factories on the horizon powered High Point's growth, but commercial development had yet to reach South Main Street. Here, dirt roads, trees, carriages, and residential homes dominate the scene. The numerous residential homes shown in the picture show what towns were like before the suburbanization of the 1920s.

#2 South Main Street business district, 1907.
Even with dirt roads, High Point had reason to celebrate, and South Main Street was the epicenter of that activity. In this photograph, people line the street to watch a parade (July 4, 1907). Note that the roads were not paved at this point and there were not any traffic signals, just ample space for horses and carriages.
