Centenary of the War to End All Wars : High Point Men and Women in World War I
Caption:
When the United States entered the war in 1917, it had to equip and train thousands of men quickly. Army camps sprung up nationwide, including three in North Carolina and three in South Carolina. For many, joining the military and reporting to a camp for training meant leaving their homes and families for the first time.

Robert Bruce Hilliard Carraway (standing, second from left) trained at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia, Camp Jackson in South Carolina, and Camp Joseph E. Johnston in Florida, before going to France. This photograph may have been taken at one of the camps. Carraway's wife, Berta, is standing, first from left.

Gift of Mary Carraway Johnson.
