Leonard Street and Fairview Street were the two graded schools for High Point African American students. Shown here is Mrs. Whitten's third grade class at Leonard Street School in 1934, including John Coltrane (third row, second from left), who many years later would be known as a ground-breaking jazz saxophonist. John Coltrane was born in Hamlet, NC, on September 23, 1926.
