Contestants for the 1955 "Miss Washington Terrace" Beauty Pageant pose poolside for the camera. Washington Terrace, built with New Deal monies as a separate recreational park for African Americans, opened in June 1938. Besides a pool, the park boasted a baseball and a softball field, six tennis courts, a fully-equipped bathhouse, and picnic grounds.
