North State Telephone workers string lines at the Commercial National Bank, Mann's Drug Store, and Elwood Hotel on the corner of South Main Street and East High Avenue. J. F. Hayden bought the High Point Telephone Exchange and incorporated in 1905. At the time, the company now known as North State Communications had about 325 telephones in service.
