During the First World War, the American Red Cross supported the war effort by providing the nation's knitters with yarns and patterns with which to make clothing for the soldiers overseas. Because different weights of knitwear had to be produced using different diameter kntting needles, the Red Cross distributed gauges like these to help women choose the right needle for the job.
