Throughout the 19th and early 20th Centuries, Germany was the world's leading manufacturer of steel needles and straight pins. Factories in Aachen, also known by its French name, Aix la Chappelle, were responsible for approximately fifty percent of the total produced. The Neuss factory was founded by Hermann Josef Neuss in 1830, to manufacture pins, needles, and buttons. Its first glass head pins were produced in 1840.
