High Point Postcards : Downtown, 1900 -1950
Caption:
Depot Square. 100 South Main Street.

In 1859, at the crossroads of the North Carolina Railroad and the Fayetteville and Western Plank Road, High Point was born. Depot Square, as it was subsequently termed, remained the city's center into the 20th Century. By 1912, the North Carolina Public Service Company (now Duke Energy) operated "electrified street railways" over several miles of track. The postcard shows the north and south tracks along Main Street, but routes also ran east and west on English Road, Green Drive and Commerce Avenue. Though in operation for only 20 years, at its peak, the trolley system ran nine cars on approximately six miles of track.
