Commercial National Bank. 164 South Main Street.

In 1924, J. Elwood Cox hailed the new, nine-story Commercial National Bank office as "the finest in North Carolina." Designed by architect Charles C. Hartmann of Greensboro, construction of the building took two years to complete. Sadly, the bank's glory was short-lived. In 1931, the Great Depression forced closure of the Commercial National Bank. The building was subsequently rented out for office space. Its oldest tenant, radio station WMFR, moved into the building's penthouse in 1940. Today, it is known as the Radio Building in WMFR's honor.
