Baseball was very popular in High Point during the decades before World War II. High Point hosted the Piedmont League Pointers from 1920-1932, and Thomasville boasted the North Carolina State League Tommies from 1937 until 1948, when the Tommies became the Hi-Toms. In addition to these minor league teams, local businesses sponsored teams in the Industrial (manufacturers) League and the Commercial (business and service industries) League.
