In 1894, the High Point Normal and Industrial Institute opened its doors in a new building. At that time, it was operated by a Quaker organization, the New York Society of Friends who purchased land for the school in 1893. Until the opening of this school, there had been few other facilities in High Point for African Americans to receive an education.
