By the late 1970s, High Point's furniture market was not only the foremost furniture exhibition in America, it was also drawing unprecedented numbers of international buyers. Exhibitors required ever more showroom space. To increase the total available, the Tomlinson factory complex was purchased and renovated. Renamed Market Square, Phase I opened in time for the April 1982 Market. Phase II was ready for use by October, bringing the complex to full occupancy. A sixteen-story annex, one of High Point's tallest buildings, was completed in 1990.
