High Point's City Lake was created in the late 1920s with the construction of a dam across the Deep River. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the federal Civil Works Administration gave $125,000 to build the surrounding park. According to the High Point Enterprise, the construction was all done by hand and put 700 people to work. The centerpiece of the park, the cross-shaped pool, cost as little as 15 cents for a day's admission. For a few cents more, swimmers could visit the snack bar and enjoy ice cream from local dairies.
