52 Weeks of Community Memories, Part 3 : High Point Historical Society celebrates 50 years
VE Exhibit Label 2:
The City of High Point opened its first, public graded school with 386 pupils on September 20, 1897. Without an adequate building already, the city utilized the J. Elwood Cox home on the corner of South Main and East Green Streets. While under construction, Mrs. Cox decided she didn't like the home, and Mr. Cox sold it to the city and paid to have it completed as a school. Main Street Graded School (or South Main Street School) also served as a junior high and high school until it closed in 1931.
