Ladies from Highland Cotton Mill, shown in this late 1940s snapshot, clearly enjoyed the company picnic at City Lake Park. The strong community created by the Highland mill and its mill village began to decline in the 1950s, when the factory sold the houses. The mill buildings are located south of downtown on Mill Avenue, along the railroad and Richland Creek.
