52 Weeks of Community Memories, Part 2 : High Point Historical Society celebrates 50 years
VE Exhibit Label 2:
Carl Chavis, star athlete and graduate of William Penn High School, was the first African American from High Point killed in World War II. While attending Morgan State College, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was killed in the line of duty September 11, 1944. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery in France and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism.
